PRESS RELEASE
Date 27th February 2012
Litter Angels, the environmental art charity, have great pleasure in announcing that it has been awarded £9,700 from Awards for All which is part of the Big Lottery fund. The award is to enable Litter Angels to deliver art-based workshops in Swale schools this September. The workshops raise awareness of the problems of littering creating anti-littering posters and sculptures from recycled materials. We are using art as the communication tool to get the message across. The award is a considerable achievement for our area.
Gordon Henderson MP set up the idea of Litter Angels in 2008 with his short story about the adventures of Eric the Litter Angel. He read the story of Eric at school assemblies to raise awareness with younger people about the problems of littering. This proved popular with the schools and he developed the idea further with Sioux Peto a swale based environmental artist who is also passionate about stopping littering.
Now, together with Colin Barnard, Polka Dot Art Centre owner, Jess McMahon Constituency Senior Caseworker to Gordon Henderson and Susannah Butcher Eco Group head at Bapchild and Tonge school, work is continuing on attracting new partnerships with local businesses and community groups.
In addition to Awards for All the Litter Angels charity is very kindly sponsored by the McDonalds Sittingbourne and Sheppey franchise and Rocque Recycling the textile recycling company based on the Isle of Sheppey. Keep Britain Tidy and CPRE are also supporters.
Details of workshops, events and how you may get involved can be found on the Litter Angels web site: www.litterangels.org.
Sioux Peto said “We really appreciated everyone’s support in this venture and this new money will make all the difference. It’s going to very exciting for everyone in Swale. Litter is a blight on our beautiful environment and we need to work together to make a difference.”
We are also looking for volunteers and community groups to help with our workshops and hands on litter picking. If you would like to get involved please contact Sioux Peto on 01795 522566 or email: info@litterangels.org
